The U.S.-Japan Cooperation on Global Challenges

Tokyo, November 17, 1999

Japan and the United States have been making cooperative efforts in tackling global challenges aiming towards a common goal of establishing a peaceful and prosperous world in the 21st Century. In June 2001, Japan and the United States announced the Partnership for Security and Prosperityother site. In that Partnership, Prime Minister Koizumi and President Bush recognized the past cooperative efforts of the two countries in tackling complex global challenges, and pledged to build on these successes to further expand bilateral global cooperation.

Since then, cooperation between Japan and the United States has expanded in various areas such as health, environment, water, reconstruction of Afghanistan, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Both leaders reiterated the importance of such cooperation on a number of occasions.
