The Closing Event of the Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the World Heritage Convention

- To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention, the Government of Japan (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Agency for Cultural Affairs, Ministry of the Environment and Forestry Agency) and UNESCO World Heritage Centre will co-organize the closing event at Kyoto International Conference Centre from 6 to 8 November 2012.
- Up to 600 people such as cultural and natural heritage experts in Japan and abroad, the States Parties and Advisory Bodies to the Convention, UNESCO officials, NGOs, the mass media are to attend the closing event.
- The closing event in Kyoto will present the year’s activities and statement for the future decades drawn from them. Reflecting upon the founding spirit of the Convention, as well as its evolution and achievements over the past four decades, the event will also discuss the present day significance of World Heritage to humanity and the future of the Convention.

This year, the World Heritage Convention celebrates on its 40th anniversary, and it is a good opportunity to reflect the Convention with a historical perspective as well as to consider the future of the World Heritage Convention. In commemoration of the 40th anniversary, starting from the opening ceremony on January 30th 2012 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, various regional events have been held around the world.
