On September 1st, 2020, Prime Minister ABE Shinzo sent a letter of condolences to Mr. Abhijit Mukherjee, son of former President Mukherjee, on the passing of H.E. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, on August 31st. The contents of the letter are as follows:

Dear Mr. Abhijit Mukherjee,

Having learned of the passing of your dearest father, H.E. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, the former President of the Republic of India, on behalf of the government and the people of Japan, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, and the government and the people of India.

H.E. Mr. Mukherjee greatly contributed to the development of India for a long time as the President, as an important Cabinet minister and as a member of the Parliament.

I fondly remember that I, along with H.E. Mr. Mukherjee, observed the magnificent Republic Day parade in January 2014. I cannot forget his warm smiles and deep wisdom he showed me when I had fruitful exchanges of views with him on Japan-India bilateral relations in December 2015.

Recalling His Excellency’s distinguished achievements, I pray for the soul of H.E. Mr. Mukherjee, and sincerely hope that the government and the people of India will overcome this great sorrow and carry forward his will to strive for the development of India.

Yours sincerely,
ABE Shinzo
Prime Minister of Japan
