Japan-Nepal Relations
Attendance of Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs SHIMADA Tomoaki at the Opening Ceremony of the “Mt. Manaslu Summit 2026”
On May 23, the "Mt, Manaslu Summit 2026", an event organized by the Japan Alpine Club and the Mainichi Newspapers Group Holdings (co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), was held in Shinagawa Campus of Rissho University to mark the 70th Anniversary of Establishment of the Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Nepal. Mr. SHIMADA Tomoaki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the event and delivered remarks on behalf of the Government of Japan.
In his remarks, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Shimada recalled that 70 years ago in 1956, a Mountaineering Team of Japan achieved the world’s first ascent of Mt. Manaslu and Japan and Nepal established the diplomatic relations, and since then, with the exchanges in the field of mountaineering by numerous mountaineers serving as a cornerstone of the cordial relations between the two countries, the bilateral exchanges have developed across a wide range of fields including education and agricultural sectors. He expressed his hope for the continued further development of Japan-Nepal relations.
The symposium attracted many visitors and was full of life, featuring a video message from the rock band ‘Godiego’, which has close ties with Nepal, screening of a digest version of the film “Standing on Manaslu” and talk sessions.
