On October 27, commencing at 4:10 p.m. local time, (5:10 p.m. on October 27, JST) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Japan-India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E. Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India during his visit to Malaysia to attend the ASEAN-related Summit Meetings. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI stated that the intentional situation and security environment surrounding us have become more severe in recent years. Minister Motegi emphasized that Japan and India, who share fundamental values and strategic interests, play a significant role in realizing peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and the international society. Minister Motegi expressed his desire to fulfill this role together with Minister Jaishankar, including through Japan-Australia-India-U.S. (Quad). In response, Minister Jaishankar stated that he is pleased that Minister Motegi has returned as Foreign Minister again, and that he shares the recognition stated by Minister Motegi. Minister Jaishankar also stated that the long-standing Japan-India partnership is special, and that he would like to work together toward regional stability.
  2. Furthermore, Minister Motegi stated that during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Japan this August, the two leaders were able to demonstrate to the world the direction of Japan-India cooperation for the next decade and the robust, strategic nature of the bilateral relationship. Minister Motegi expressed the intention to steadily achieve results in the three areas of (1) Security, (2) Economy, Investment, and Innovation, and (3) People-to-People Exchanges, and to elevate the bilateral relationship to new heights as mutually complementary partners. In response, Minister Jaishankar stated that Prime Minister Modi's recent visit to Japan was positive and fruitful, and that he would like to discuss how to advance these cooperation initiatives in a concrete manner.
  3. Both ministers also held discussions on regional issues.
