Japan-Singapore Relations

On December 15, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Chief Cabinet Secretary, received a courtesy call by H.E. Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Republic of Singapore, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Commemorative Summit for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi welcomed Minister Balakrishnan’s visit to Japan, and expressed his desire to further deepen cooperation with Singapore, which will serve as ASEAN Country Coordinator for Japan for three years starting next summer. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi also stated that summit meeting would become an opportunity to pass on to the next generation the "trust," which Japan and ASEAN have been built thus far, and to further strengthen the relationship between Japan and ASEAN.
  2. In response, Minister Balakrishnan expressed his appreciation for Japan's welcome on his visit to Japan and his hope to work to further develop Japan-Singapore relations.
  3. The two leaders also exchanged views on a wide range of subjects such as people-to-people exchanges, economic field, and regional and international issues, and confirmed that they will continue to work together.
