Japan- Timor-Leste Relations

  1. On 15 March 2016, Mrs. Akie Abe, spouse of the Prime Minister of Japan, held a meeting with Mrs. Isabel da Costa Ferreira, spouse of the President of Timor-Leste, who is on a working visit to Japan.
  2. Mrs. Abe welcomed the visit of Mrs. Ferreira and expressed her sincere respect for Timor-Leste’s overcoming the hardship and making a steady progress in its nation-building as well as for the contributions President Ruak and Mrs. Ferreira have been making in the process.
  3. Mrs. Ferreira expressed her gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to her during her visit to Japan as well as her deep appreciation for the considerable assistance Japan has extended to Timor-Leste. In response, Mrs. Abe stated that Japan would like to continue to work with Timor-Leste as a friend and expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the assistance extended to Japan by Timor-Leste on the occasion of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
  4. In addition, after Mrs. Ferreira introduced the social work in areas such as poverty reduction and education that she has been actively engaged in, Mrs. Abe and Mrs. Ferreira exchanged views on the challenges each country is facing today.
