Japan-Indonesia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On July 26, commencing at 3:15 p.m. local time (July 26, 5:15 p.m. Japan Time) for approximately 30 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to attend the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ meetings, held a meeting with H.E. Ms. Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Kamikawa expressed her pleasure to see Minister Retno again and stated that she would strengthen collaboration in various areas, including the WPS, to further develop bilateral relations between the two countries since they are Comprehensive Strategic Partners sharing fundamental values and principles. In response, Minister Retno expressed her desire to work together to further reinforce the already close bilateral partnership.
- Minister Kamikawa expressed her intention to continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation in economic fields, referring to infrastructure development such as Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) as well as to decarbonization and energy cooperation including the Second Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting planned to be held in Indonesia in August. Minister Kamikawa also stated that she attaches importance to collaboration with Indonesia in maintaining and strengthening the free and open international order based on the rule of law and expressed her intention to further advance security cooperation. In response, Minister Retno stated that she would also like to further enhance bilateral cooperation in such broad areas.
- The two Ministers also exchanged views on the regional situation including the situation in the East and South China Seas and confirmed that they would continue to work together.
- The two Ministers referred to the attacks on the high-speed railway that occurred in France, and concurred to work together so that the Olympic games would be held safely.
