Japan-Brunei Foreign Ministers' Meeting

On June 29, commencing at 12:40 p.m.(local time; 19:40. JST) for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Italy to attend the G20 Foreign and Development Ministers’ Meeting, held a bilateral meeting with the Honorable Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, Minister of Foreign Affairs II, Brunei Darussalam. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- The two ministers exchanged views on the situation in Myanmar. At the outset, Minister Erywan gave a briefing on the developments since the telephone conversation between the two ministers on June 9 and on future ASEAN initiatives.
- In response, Minister Motegi stated that Japan supports the special envoy of the ASEAN Chair which will be nominated hereafter. Furthermore, he delivered Japan’s position on the activities of the special envoy and mentioned that Japan has continued to strongly urge the Myanmar Military to realize dialogues and to release those who are detained. The two ministers concurred to continue working in close coordination in order to respond to the situation in Myanmar.
