Japan-Viet Nam Relations

From March 6 to 7, Mr. SHIMADA Tomoaki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs visited Ho Chi Minh City, Vier Nam. The following is the summary of his visit.

1. Meetings with Dignitaries of the Government of Viet Nam

(1) Meeting with H.E. Ms. Tran Thi Dieu Thuy, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee

On March 6, Mr. SHIMADA held a meeting with H.E. Ms. Tran Thi Dieu Thuy, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.
Mr. SHIMADA welcomed the progress in cultural and local government exchanges between Japan and Viet Nam, including events such as the Japan Vietnam Festival. He expressed his hope that exchanges between the two countries will continue to deepen across a wide range of fields. Furthermore, they discussed the importance of urban transport and infrastructure development, as well as the improvement of the investment environment, in promoting the regional economic growth.

(2) Meeting with H.E. Mr. Nguyen Minh Vu, Permanent Deputy Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam

On March 7, Mr. SHIMADA held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Nguyen Minh Vu, Permanent Deputy Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
Mr. SHIMADA stated that under the Japan-Vietnam the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership”, he intends to continue strengthening relations across a wide range of fields in support of realizing a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). He expressed his intention to coordinate high-level meetings and exchanges of dignitaries between the two countries.
In response, Permanent Deputy Minister Vu expressed his intention to further strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries.

2. Attendance at the 11th Japan Vietnam Festival

On March 7, Mr. SHIMADA attended the 11th Japan Vietnam Festival (JVF), one of the largest Japan-Vietnam exchange events held in Ho Chi Minh City, and delivered remarks at the opening ceremony. He also toured the venue including Japanese company booths, attended the Bon Odori festival together with representatives from the Ho Chi Minh City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and interacted with local residents.

3. Site Visits

(1) Visit to the War Remnants Museum

On March 6, Mr. SHIADA visited the War Remnants Museum and was briefed on materials and exhibits related to the Vietnam War.

(2) Visit to Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 1

One March 7, Mr. SHIMADA visited the Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 1, which opened last year with Japan's support, and rode from Ben Thanh Station to An Phu Station.

(3) Visit to Binh Hung Wastewater Treatment Plant

On March 7, Mr. SHIMADA visited the Binh Hung Wastewater Treatment Plant, where he was briefed on Japan’s past support and on Ho Chi Minh City’s future wastewater treatment plans.

4. Meeting with Japanese Nationals in Ho Chi Minh City

On March 6, Mr. SHIMADA held a meeting with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ho Chi Minh City and exchanged views on Japanese companies operating in the city as well as on economic trends in Ho Chi Minh City.
