Japan-Thailand Relations

On September 3, the 16th Japan-Thailand Politico-Military (PM) Dialogue was held in Tokyo.

  1. The Japanese delegation was led by Ms. OKANO Yukiko, Director-General, Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. ARIMA Takanori Director General for International Affairs, Bureau of Defense Policy, Ministry of Defense. The Thai delegation was led by H.E. Mr. Piyapak Sricharoen, Director-General, Department of East Asian Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and H.E. Gen Sura Saiubol, Director-General, Office of Policy and Planning, Ministry of Defence.
  2. Both sides exchanged views on a variety of issues, including Japan-Thailand security and defense cooperation as well as regional affairs, and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen cooperation in the security field under the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership”in anticipation of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Thailand next year.
  3. On this occasion, Director-General Okano also held a separate meeting with Director-General Piyapak in which both sides concurred on strengthening bilateral relations, including economic ties and people-to-people exchanges.
