On May 9, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. SHIMADA Tomoaki attended the opening ceremony of the 26th Thai Festival Tokyo together with H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand and delivered a speech on behalf of the Japanese government.

In his address, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Shimada mentioned about the close relationship between Japan and Thailand, noting that there are more than 70,000 Japanese nationals residing in Thailand and that the numbers of mutual visitors between the two countries exceed 1 million each. He also stated that the Thai Festival, which marks its 26th anniversary this year, has played a significant role in fostering exchanges and mutual understanding between people of both countries. Finally, he stated that cultural exchange between Japan and Thailand will further strengthen the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” between the two countries and expressed his hope for the further expansion of bilateral relations toward the 140th anniversary of Japan–Thailand diplomatic relations next year.

The opening ceremony was attended by many honored guests including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak and Mr. Witchu Vejjajiva, Ambassador of Thailand to Japan.
