Japan-Myanmar Relations

April 20, 2015
The Special Envoy of the Government of Japan for National Reconciliation in Myanmar, Yohei Sasakawa, welcomes the recent agreement between the Union Peacemaking Work Committee (UPWC), representing the Union Government of Myanmar, and the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT), representing the ethnic armed groups, on outstanding elements of the text of the National Ceasefire Agreement (NCA), as witnessed by H.E. U Thein Sein, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar at the Myanmar Peace Center (MPC).

This level of agreement exemplifies the serious commitment that both parties have made toward the ongoing Myanmar peace process. The parties to the current agreement are to be congratulated for their relentless efforts to maintain dialogue and build mutual trust even during a difficult time in Myanmar’s transition.

For close to half a century, Japan has provided uninterrupted support to Myanmar through its various efforts to improve the welfare of the people of Myanmar. Japan stands ready to remain engaged with both parties as the country moves toward a critical phase of achieving lasting peace.
