Japan-Laos Relations

His Excellency Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party will visit Japan from May 25 to May 27, 2023.

  1. During his stay in Japan, His Majesty the Emperor of Japan will hold audience to the President. Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, will hold a meeting with President Thongloun to discuss the bilateral relations and regional and international issues. President Thongloun will attend the Nikkei Forum 28th “Future of Asia.”
  2. President Thongloun’s visit to Japan is expected to further strengthen the friendship between Japan and Laos towards further fostering the strategic partnership between the two countries, which will see the 70th anniversary of the diplomatic relations in 2025. Japan and Laos will strengthen cooperation towards the Commemorative Summit for the 50 Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation in December this year as well as the Laos’ Chairmanship of ASEAN next year.

  1. President Thongloun was inaugurated as the President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic on March 22, 2021. This will be President Thongloun’s first visit to Japan as President.
  2. Prime Minister KISHIDA had a courtesy call on then-Prime Minister Thongloun when he was Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan in May, 2016.
