Meeting between Mr. Masaji Matsuyama, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs and Mr. Oliver Vodoz, Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross

On June 1, commencing at 2:00 p.m. for around 30 minutes, Mr. Masaji Matsuyama, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with Mr. Oliver Vodoz, Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
1. Vice-Minister Matsuyama welcomed the participation of the ICRC in the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V), and remarked on the accomplishments of Vice-President Vodoz over seven years as the Chairman of the Joint Commission of the Empress Shoken Fund. In addition, he highly commended the activities of the ICRC in conflict areas, expressed condolences for the loss of its staff by the terrorism attack a few days ago. Furthermore he said Japan recognized the ICRC as an important partner of humanitarian assistance, and added that he wanted to continue close cooperation with the organization.
2. Vice-President Vodoz communicated congratulations on the opening of TICAD V and gratitude for the great amount of funding cooperation offered to the ICRC from Japan. He explained the importance of African countries for the ICRC, and he stated that he wanted to continue to cooperate with Japan for humanitarian assistance in areas across the world.
