Protecting the Global Environmen
Forests

Forests must be conserved, and their resources must be managed in a sustainable fashion. We work together with these aims in mind, and also coordinate our efforts with other countries through international organizations. Both Governments provide the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) with material and funding to support its biodiversity research and training program at Subic Bay in the Philippines: Japan provided US$52,000 in grant aid for grass-roots projects in July 1994, and the United States has provided funds and technical assistance. We are also jointly supporting Conservation Melanesia, an NGO which receives WWF assistance for a forest management training program in Papua New Guinea. Japan and the United States have also jointly provided funding through the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) for a number of innovative projects. Projects include monitoring of forest health in Indonesia, development of new types of pest-resistant trees in West Africa, and reforestation in Peru (planting trees of economic benefit).
