Objectives and Expected Results

Upon the belief that reconstruction assistance will form with the Peace Process the two pillars of peace and stability in Afghanistan, this conference will present the opportunity for high-level exchange of views on the reconstruction assistance to Afghanistan. The results expected for the meeting can be illustrated in the following two points:

(1) Send out a message that the attending countries from a wide range of regions are committed at a high level to contributing to the reconstruction to Afghanistan and supporting peace and stability in the country.

(2) Present specific ways of contributing to the reconstruction of Afghanistan based on the needs assessment concerning reconstruction, finalised by the World Banks, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The World Bank has pointed out health, education, roads, energy, landmines, agriculture and employment as key sectors, on the premise that the assessment is still preliminary.

Other

Japan has already announced the contribution of US$1 million for the UN Afghanistan Interim Authority Fund (for the coming six months from the inauguration of the Interim Authority until the holding of the Emergency Loya Jirga), targeted at areas of urgent priority such as recurrent costs.
