Japan-United Kingdom Relations

  1. On September 6, following the appointment of the Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, sent a congratulatory letter to Prime Minister Truss on the same day.
  2. In the letter, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his intention to work closely with Prime Minister Truss to further deepen the Japan-UK relationship as global strategic partners that share fundamental values. He also stated that he hoped to strengthen the bilateral collaboration towards realizing a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific,” citing UK’s further involvement in the region.
  3. Moreover, Prime Minister Kishida explained that closer cooperation in the international community between Japan and the UK was becoming more crucial. He stated that he hoped to work together with the UK to address various issues in the international community at the G7 Hiroshima Summit under Japan’s presidency as well as the UN Security Council with Japan serving as a non-permanent member next year.
