Japanese-Dutch Cultural Agreement was signed in 1980.

Recent Trends

The year 2000 marked 400 years of relations between Japan and the Netherlands.
The year 2008 marked the 150th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations.
The year 2009 marked 400th anniversary of Trade relations between two countries.
After the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, a number of charity events were held all over the Netherlands. Japanese drummers from Rikuzentakata, a city in one of the devastated areas, expressed their gratitude and wish for recovery in 2012 by performing music in the Netherlands.
In March 2014, Prime Minister Mr. Abe attended the Nuclear Security Summit and held the Japan-Netherlands Summit Meeting with Prime Minister Mr. Rutte in The Hague.
In April 2014, Foreign Minister Mr. Timmermans attended the 8th NPDI Ministerial Meeting and held the Japan-Netherlands Foreign Ministers' Meeting with Foreign Minister Mr. Kishida in Hiroshima.
In October 2014, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima paid a state visit to Japan, accompanied by Foreign Minister Mr. Koenders and Economic Minister Mr. Kamp. Foreign Minister Mr. Koenders held the Japan-Netherlands Foreign Ministers' Meeting with Foreign Minister Mr. Kishida in Tokyo.
In November 2015, Prime Minister Mr. Rutte visited Japan, accompanied by Economic Minister Mr. Kamp, and he held a Japan-Netherlands Summit Meeting with Prime Minister Abe. Both leaders decided to characterize the Japan-Netherlands relations as a "Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Peace and Prosperity".

In December 2016, Defence Minister Mrs. Hennis-Plasschaert visited Japan and held the Japan-Netherlands defense ministerial meeting with Defense Minister Mrs. Inada.

In February 2018, Foreign Minister Mr. Zijlstra visited Japan and held the Japan-Netherlands Foreign Minister’s Meeting with Foreign Minister Kono in Tokyo.

In January 2019, Prime Minister Mr. Abe visited the Netherlands and held a Japan-Netherlands Summit Meeting with Prime Minister Mr. Rutte.

In June 2019, Prime Minister Mr. Rutte visited Japan to attend G20 Osaka Summit. Her Majesty Queen Máxima also visited Japan to attend events related to G20 Osaka Summit in her capacity as UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA).

 

In October 2019, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima paid a visit to Japan to attend the Ceremony of the Enthronement of His Majesty the Emperor.

In November 2019, Foreign Minister Mr. Blok visited Japan to attend G20 Aichi-Nagoya Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The Minister held the Japan-Netherlands Foreign Ministers' Meeting with Foreign Minister Mr. Motegi in Tokyo.
