Summary of discussion by Prime Minister Mori on the situation in the Fiji Islands and the Solomon Islands at the meeting with the Heads of delegations from SPF member countries
(8 June 2000, 18:40 - 19:20 at the Akasaka Palace)
Prime Minister Mori met with the heads of delegations from SPF member countries to the funeral for the former Prime Minister, Mr. Keizo Obuchi. The situations in the Fiji Islands and the Solomon Islands were discussed during the meeting. At the end of the session, Prime Minister Mori suggested the following five points as the shared understanding of the participants to the meeting on the subject. The participants unanimously accepted Mr. Mori's suggestion.
(1) We share a grave concern about the situation in the Fiji Islands and the Solomon Islands.
(2) We strongly condemn those attempts to overthrow illegally a democratically elected government.
(3) We demand the immediate release of those who are detained by the armed groups in these two countries.
(4) We strongly hope that the restoration of constitutional democracy and return to normalcy in these two countries be swiftly realized.
(5) We are determined to support the efforts by the peoples of these two countries, through close consultation and cooperation.
