Funding for the Japan Platform (JPF)

- The Government of Japan decided on December 28 (Tues) to contribute one billion yen of funding to the NGO units comprising the Japan Platform (JPF), with the aim of supporting and strengthening their activities.
- The funding for the JPF will be used to enable JPF-affiliated NGOs (non-governmental organizations) to carry out promptly such activities as preliminary investigation, setting up of a local framework, distribution of emergency goods, when engaging in emergency humanitarian assistance activities in areas of conflict and disaster including the earthquake that occurred off the coast of Sumatra. This funding is expected to reinforce the foundation of Japan's emergency humanitarian assistance and promote visibility of Japanese NGOs' contribution extended to those afflicted by disasters and conflicts.
- The Government of Japan contributed to the NGO units 580 million yen in July 2001, 610 million yen in September 2002, 700 million yen in May 2003 and two billion yen in March 2004, including assistance for Iraq, which have being utilized effectively for emergency humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan, Zambia, Iraq, Iran and Liberia.

1. Japan Platform (JPF)
An organization established in August 2000 with the aim of providing prompt and effective emergency humanitarian assistance activities for disasters and conflicts, among others, in coordination and cooperation with Japanese NGOs, economic circles and the government.
2. NGO units of the JPF
A coalition of NGOs affiliated with the JPF, the project implementation entity. It has gained a legal personality. Currently, 16 organizations are registered as its members.
