Statements and Messages from the Prime Minister

August 31, 2026

On the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Norwegian Royal Family, the Government and the people of Norway on behalf of the Government and people of Japan.

Since his accession to the throne in 1991, His Majesty King Harald V has always remained close to his people, guiding the nation with warmth and humanity, and playing an exceptionally important role in Norway’s development and in the peace and prosperity of the international community.

Japan–Norway relations have developed, underpinned by the traditional friendship between Imperial Family of Japan and the Norwegian Royal Family. As Crown Prince, His Majesty King Harald V competed as an athlete at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, becoming a symbol of exchange through sport. He visited Japan on six occasions and, through industrial and cultural exchanges, attendance at our national ceremonies, and a State Visit, he greatly contributed to further deepening the friendship and goodwill between our two countries.

The passing of His Majesty King Harald V, who led Norway amid a turbulent international situation, is a great loss not only for the people of Norway but also for the international community. Japan’s thoughts are with Norway as the people overcome this profound sadness.
