Statement by the Foreign Minister
General Election in Myanmar (Statement by Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu)
January 30, 2026
- A general election was recently held in Myanmar, marking the first since the coup d’état on February 1, 2021. The international community, including Japan, had repeatedly urged the current Myanmar “regime” to work toward political progress, such as the release of those who are detained, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and sincere dialogue among parties concerned. It is regrettable that such efforts were not realized prior to holding of the election.
- Japan will continue to closely monitor moves toward such political progress and the subsequent process toward the restoration of the democratic political system. Japan will also continue to strengthen its efforts to improve the situation, including urging the cessation of airstrikes and other acts of violence, as well as the release of those who are detained.
- At the same time, under the consistent policy to support the people of Myanmar in difficulties, Japan will continue to actively provide humanitarian assistance and support for improving people’s lives in a manner that directly benefits the people of Myanmar.
