Statement by the Foreign Minister

  1. Japan is deeply concerned about the escalation of attacks between the two sides since Hezbollah attacked Israel on 2 March, resulting in numerous civilian casualties and extensive damage to civilian infrastructure.
  2. On March 16, Israel Defense Forces announced the implementation of ground operation. Japan expresses its serious concern over this ground operation amid the call from the international community for restraint. Japan strongly calls for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity to be respected.
  3. On March 29 and 30, three personnel of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were killed. Attacks against the UN personnel are unacceptable, and Japan condemns all threats to the safety and security of UNIFIL. Japan expresses its heartfelt condolences over the loss of the three personnel.
  4. In order to prevent a further deterioration of the situation, Japan calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, and strongly urges all parties to comply with international law including international humanitarian law, and to fully implement relevant UN Security Council Resolutions, including UNSCR 1701. At the same time, in order to prevent further escalation, Japan strongly urges them to exercise maximum restraint and to make sincere efforts for a diplomatic settlement.
