The First Japan-Australia Strategic Consultation

On October 8, commencing at 6:30 p.m. for approximately three hours, Mr. FUNAKOSHI Takehiro, Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held the first Japan-Australia Strategic Consultation with Her Excellency Ms. Jan Adams, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia.
- The two sides welcomed the convening of the Japan-Australia Strategic Consultation, which was launched at the Japan-Australia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in May this year. Building on the outcomes of the visit of Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan to Australia in May and taking the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and Australia, the two sides concurred on further strengthening concrete bilateral cooperation in a wide range of fields, including security, economic security, and the economy.
- The two sides shared views on the current challenging strategic environment and engaged in candid discussions on various issues and challenges in the Indo-Pacific region as well as in the international arena. The two sides confirmed that the two countries would further strengthen their cooperation toward the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP).”
