On October 1st, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and H.E. Ms. Petra Sigmund, Ambassador of Germany to Japan, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany on Assisting Japanese and German Nationals Abroad.

  1. Japan and Germany have strengthened their coordination in the evacuation of their nationals from abroad during crises, based on their cooperation in evacuating their nationals from the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire in 2004 and the Republic of South Sudan in 2013. With this background, and in light of their close and steadfast partnership, both sides decided to sign the Memorandum as a framework to further facilitate cooperation in assisting their nationals abroad in crises. This Memorandum serves as a framework to facilitate routine information sharing and smooth cooperation in the event of unforeseen circumstances and is expected to contribute significantly to ensuring the safety of Japanese and German nationals during overseas crises.
  2. At the signing ceremony, Foreign Minister Motegi had a meeting with Ambassador Sigmund and reaffirmed cooperation between Japan and Germany across a wide range of fields.
