Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs ERI Visit to Latvia
From September 13 to 16, Ms. ERI Arfiya, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, visited the Republic of Latvia and exchanged views with senior officials of the Latvian Government.
1. Courtesy Call on H.E. Ms. Baiba Braže, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia
On September 14, Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI paid a courtesy call on H.E. Ms. Baiba Braže, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia.
Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI referred to the update of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” and stated that, toward its realization, Japan would like to further develop the strategic partnership between the two countries and work closely with Latvia to further strengthen bilateral relations. In response, Minister Braže stated that Latvia would continue to cooperate with Japan in addressing various challenges facing the international community, including the situation in Ukraine.
2. Meeting with Mr. Andžejs Viļumsons, State Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia
On the same day, Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI held a meeting with Mr. Andžejs Viļumsons, State Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia.
In light of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and economic security risks, Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI stated that Japan would like to share knowledge and expertise with Latvia and deepen cooperation in areas such as strengthening supply chain resilience and developing trusted digital infrastructure under the updated FOIP. In response, State Secretary Viļumsons stated that, building on the remarkable development of Japan-Latvia relations in recent years, Latvia would like to further advance bilateral relations by deepening cooperation not only in the political and security fields but also in areas such as IT, high-speed rail, and infrastructure.
