Courtesy Call on Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs SHIMADA by Outstanding International Students of the University of Tokyo's Matsuo Laboratory AI Program (GCI World)
On August 25, commencing at 5:30 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. SHIMADA Tomoaki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from a group of outstanding international students participating in the University of Tokyo's Global Consumer Intelligence (GCI World) course run by the Matsuo Lab, from Bangladesh, Benin, Colombia, Egypt, India, Malaysia, Mauritius, the Philippines, Thailand, and Tunisia.
- At the outset, Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA welcomed their visit and emphasized the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' intention to support the endeavors of these young leaders, with the aim of strengthening international cooperation in the field of AI and co-creating a "safe, secure, and trustworthy AI" ecosystem in the future.
- In response, participating students, including five students representing the group shared their aspirations to apply the knowledge and expertise acquired through the AI-researching program to their future careers and their own businesses. A lively exchange of views then took place between Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA and the participating students, on topics including cooperation to co-create a “safe, secure, and trustworthy AI” ecosystem.

This program is the English version of the University of Tokyo's Matsuo Laboratory's introductory AI lectures, provided online to university students overseas. It is designed to equip the students with the basic knowledge of AI and data science, connecting these concepts to practical applications in marketing.
Commencing in September 2025, the program completed two terms to date, with over 25,000 participants from 114 countries all over the world, including the Global South.
