1st Meeting of the Japan-Malaysia AI Platform

On 16 July, a 1st meeting of the Japan-Malaysia AI Platform, established at the Japan-Malaysia Summit Meeting in June, was held online.
- From the Japanese side, Mr. HANADA Takahiro, Deputy Director-General, Economic Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) attended the meeting. From the Malaysian side, representatives from Ministry of Digital, MyDIGITAL Corporation, National AI Office (NAIO) attended.
- At the outset, DDG Hanada stated that through the Japan-ASEAN Co-creation Initiative for AI, Japan is advancing efforts together with ASEAN countries, including Malaysia, to co-create a ‘safe, secure and trustworthy AI’ ecosystem. He further expressed Japan's desire to promote cooperation with Malaysia in various fields, including co-creating AI solutions to address social challenges. Both sides also exchanged views on AI governance, including AI safety and security, and confirmed their intention to continue deepening information sharing and cooperation in this area.
- The Malaysian side expressed its expectations for Japanese AI technology in addressing the country's social challenges, such as agriculture, food security, AI education, mobility, and transportation. Furthermore, representatives from the METI and the MIC introduced initiatives by Japanese companies, including startups providing AI solutions to tackle Malaysia's social challenges. Both sides also held an exchange of views on broader AI cooperation.
- They confirmed that they will cooperate under the Platform to promote the matching of Japanese and Malaysian companies aimed at solving social issues and developing concrete collaborative projects, through regular communications between the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia and MyDIGITAL. They also confirmed that, building on the discussions of the meeting, they will continue to hold government-to-government consultations on broader AI cooperation including AI governance and security, beyond the co-creation of AI solutions through business matching.
