Foreign Minister MOTEGI’s Meeting with The Honourable SIDHU, Minister of International Trade of Canada

On June 25, commencing at 5:00 p.m. for 30 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with the Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade of Canada.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI expressed his appreciation for the importance Canada places on the Indo-Pacific and welcomed the visit by Minister Sidhu to Japan leading a Team Canada Trade Mission with a delegation of roughly 300 members.
- Minister MOTEGI stated that Japan, in its relations with Canada, attaches significance to cooperation in the economic field including economic security – covering areas ranging from energy, critical minerals to advanced technologies such as AI and quantum technologies, as well as food, in addition to the fields of security and defence. He also expressed his hope that this trade mission would serve as an opportunity to further advance concrete cooperation.
- In response, Minister Sidhu stated he was pleased to visit Japan with the largest ever mission to the Indo-Pacific region, composed of 300 members and close to 180 companies, that marks the first concrete step under the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” and expressed his hope that this mission would serve as an opportunity to further expand the base of business cooperation between Japan and Canada.
- The two ministers also noted that the year 2028 will mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, and shared the view that they would further strengthen their bilateral relations.
