Japan-Singapore Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On June 24, commencing at 4:15 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, at the request of the Singaporean side, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with H.E. Dr. Vivian BALAKRISHNAN, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Singapore.
- At the outset, both ministers welcomed the upgrading of a bilateral relationship between Japan and Singapore to a “Strategic Partnership” in this milestone year of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and the progress that has been made based on the joint statement issued by the Prime Ministers in March.
- Foreign Minister Balakrishnan provided an explanation on his visit to China and North Korea last month.
- Both ministers exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and East Asia such as issues related to China and their policies toward North Korea, including on the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue. They confirmed that they will continue to coordinate closely in responding to various regional affairs.
