On June 2, 2026, Dr. KUNIMITSU Ayano, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended the National Day Reception of Italy held at the residence of the Ambassador of Italy to Japan, and delivered her speech on behalf of the Government of Japan.

  1. State Minister KUNIMITSU stated that the relationship between Japan and Italy has been steadily progressing across a wide range of fields, including security, economy, economic security, science and technology, culture, and cooperation in the international arena. She also mentioned that this year marks the momentous 160th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Italy.
  2. State Minister KUNIMITSU also noted that, on the occasion of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to Japan in January this year, Japan-Italy relations became a “Special Strategic Partnership.” She expressed Japan’s intention to further strengthen broad-based cooperation both bilaterally and multilaterally, and to further elevate Japan-Italy relations to even greater heights.
