Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs SHIMADA’s attendance at the Japan-Norway AI Innovation Forum
On June 2, Mr. SHIMADA Tomoaki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan,attended the Japan-Norway AI Innovation Forum hosted by the Embassy of Norway in Japan and delivered a greeting on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
The forum was attended by Ms. Karianne TUNG, Minister of Digitalization and Public Governance of Norway, and Ms. ONODA Kimi, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence Strategy of Japan.
Prior to attending the forum, Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA also exchanged views with Minister TUNG, together with Minister ONODA.
1. Japan-Norway AI Innovation Forum
Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA attended and delivered a remark at the closing ceremony of the Japan-Norway AI Innovation Forum. The overview of his remarks is as follows:
- At the outset, Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA congratulated the successful holding of the Japan-Norway AI Innovation Forum.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA stated that AI is a pillar of Japan's growth strategy, and that in order to promote AI innovation while minimizing the risks posed by AI, it is essential to establish a "safe, secure, and trustworthy AI” governance and ecosystem.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA also introduced the "Hiroshima AI Process" as Japan's initiative regarding AI governance. He highlighted that Japan is working to achieve "trustworthy AI" under this process, together with Global South countries and AI companies leading global innovation, and expressed his expectation for the participation of Norwegian companies in this process.
- In addition, Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA introduced Japan’s initiatives to co-create a "safe, secure, and trustworthy AI" ecosystem with trusted partners including Norway, and expressed his expectation for companies from both countries to co-create AI solutions in the medical and maritime fields.
2. Exchange of Views with Ms. Karianne TUNG, Minister of Digitalization and Public Governance of Norway
Prior to attending the "Japan-Norway AI Innovation Forum," Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA, together with Minister ONODA exchanged views with Minister Tung.
- Following Minister ONODA's remarks, Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA stated that cooperation with Norway, a trusted partner sharing common values, is more important than ever. He expressed Japan's continued commitment to co-creating a "safe, secure, and trustworthy AI" ecosystem with trusted partners and also stated his desire to further strengthen cooperation with Norway through initiatives such as the "Hiroshima AI Process," launched by Japan and in which Norway participates.
- Subsequently, both ministers and Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA exchanged views on AI cooperation between Japan and Norway, and concurred to cooperate towards the early holding of an AI summit in Japan.
