Japan-Iran Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Call

On May 22, commencing at 6:00 p.m. for 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone call with H.E. Dr. Seyyed Abbas ARAGHCHI, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran.

  1. Minister MOTEGI stated that it is valuable that he and Foreign Minister Araghchi are able to continue close communication at a time where the situation surrounding Iran is approaching a critical juncture. He also stated that Japan has consistently maintained the position that what matters most is that the ceasefire is maintained and that de-escalation of the situation, including in the Strait of Hormuz, is steadily achieved. He expressed his strong hope that Iran will continue to show maximum flexibility and that the talks with the U.S. will resume promptly.
  2. In addition, Minister MOTEGI underscored the importance of free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for vessels of all countries including Japan, and following the passage of a Japan-related vessel, he requested that the passage of all remaining vessels be realized as soon as possible.
  3. Furthermore, Minister MOTEGI requested an early resolution to the issue concerning the Japanese national released on bail in Iran last April.
  4. In response, Foreign Minister Araghchi explained the current state of exchanges between the United States and Iran as well as Iran’s positions. Both ministers confirmed that they would continue to maintain close communication towards the early de-escalation of the situation.
