Meeting and working dinner between Foreign Minister MOTEGI and OECD Secretary-General Cormann
On May 12, commencing at 6:50 p.m. for approximately 80 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting and a working dinner with Mr. Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), who is visiting Japan as a guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI welcomed Secretary-General Cormann’s visit to Japan as a guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Minister MOTEGI also stated that Japan places great importance on cooperation with the OECD in the areas of free trade and economic security, and welcomed the issuance of the “Cooperation Plan on Economic Security between Japan and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).” In response, Secretary-General Cormann expressed his gratitude for Japan’s warm hospitality and his expectations for the future development of the cooperative relationship with Japan, including the strengthening of cooperation in the area of economic security following the issuance of the cooperation plan.
- Minister MOTEGI stated that Japan has supported the OECD’s active engagement in Southeast Asia in areas such as AI, shipbuilding, and critical minerals, and that these efforts align with the updated “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” approach. He also stated that Japan would continue to further strengthen its relationship with the OECD and expressed its intention to continue supporting the accession processes of Thailand and Indonesia, which are currently under review. In response, Secretary-General Cormann expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support to date and emphasized the importance of outreach to non-member countries, including those in Southeast Asia, to promote the rules and standards established by the OECD, and stated that the OECD would continue these efforts with Japan’s support.
- Furthermore, Minister MOTEGI explained the importance of Japanese staff playing active roles in international organizations. In response, Secretary-General Cormann expressed gratitude for the contributions of Japanese staff, including Deputy Secretary-General MASAKI, and stated that he looks forward to their continued active contributions.
- Both sides confirmed their commitment to engage in closer coordination and cooperation in various areas, including free trade and economic security, as well as in outreach to Southeast Asia.
