Japan-Australia Foreign Ministers' Telephone Meeting

On April 8, commencing at 3 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with Senator the Hon. Penny WONG, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Australia.
- The two Ministers concurred that they would further strengthen concrete bilateral cooperation across a broad range of areas, including security, economy and economic security on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation between Japan and Australia with a view to realizing a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”.
- The two Ministers discussed the current situation in the Middle East, including the importance of cooperation between Japan and Australia to ensure a stable supply of energy and critical goods. In this context, they welcomed today’s announcement of a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran as a positive development, and shared the view on the importance of reaching a final agreement at an early stage through dialogue. Furthermore, they concurred that Japan and Australia will continue to communicate closely with each other so that de-escalation of the situation, including ensuring the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, would be realized.
