Japan-Australia Foreign Ministers' Telephone Meeting

On April 8, commencing at 3 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with Senator the Hon. Penny WONG, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Australia.

  1. The two Ministers concurred that they would further strengthen concrete bilateral cooperation across a broad range of areas, including security, economy and economic security on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation between Japan and Australia with a view to realizing a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”.
  2. The two Ministers discussed the current situation in the Middle East, including the importance of cooperation between Japan and Australia to ensure a stable supply of energy and critical goods. In this context, they welcomed today’s announcement of a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran as a positive development, and shared the view on the importance of reaching a final agreement at an early stage through dialogue. Furthermore, they concurred that Japan and Australia will continue to communicate closely with each other so that de-escalation of the situation, including ensuring the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, would be realized.
