Courtesy Call on Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs SHIMADA by AI Policy Officials from the Global South

On March 18, commencing at 10:50 a.m. for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. SHIMADA Tomoaki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from AI policy officials from the Global South countries (Brazil, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam), who are visiting Japan under a Ministry of Foreign Affairs invitation program. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA welcomed the their visit and emphasized that the importance of cooperation with the Global South in the field of AI is increasing. He expressed his intention to strengthen cooperative relationships with each country to co-create a “safe, secure, and trustworthy AI” ecosystem.
- In response, the participants expressed their gratitude to the Government of Japan for the invaluable experience provided through this program. They also stated that during their stay, they were able to learn a great deal about Japan’s AI policies and technologies, and that they hope to contribute to strengthening AI cooperation with Japan in the future. Afterwards, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Shimada and the delegation held active discussions regarding challenges in AI utilization and the form of AI governance.
