Meeting between State Minister HORII and Ambassador Gregoire-van Haaren

On March 12, commencing at 11:00 am, for approximately 30minutes, Mr. HORII Iwao, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call by H.E. Ambassador Lise Gregoire-van Haaren, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations, Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on Security Council Reform(IGN). The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset of the meeting, State Minister HORII welcomed Ambassador Gretoire-van Haaren on her first visit to Japan and stated that it is important to restore trust in the United Nations, the core of multilateralism, amid the concerns over the effectiveness and legitimacy of the UN. State Minister HORII emphasized that, Security Council reform is extremely important, as it bears primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, and that reforming the Security Council to truly reflect the current realities of the international community is urgently needed.
  2. Ambassador Gregoire-van Haaren expressed her desire to further strengthen cooperation on various issues in the international arena including Security Council reform.
  3. Both sides concurred on the importance of achieving concrete progress towards Security Council reform and further cooperation.
