The 9th Japan-UK Cyber Dialogue

On February 27, the 9th Japan-UK Cyber Dialogue was held in Tokyo, Japan.
- This dialogue was co-chaired by Mr. MIYAKE Fumito, Ambassador in charge of Cyber Policy and Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Policy Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Japan, and Mr. Andrew Whittaker, Head of Cyber Policy Department, Hybrid Threat Directorate, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, with the participation of officials from, on the Japanese side, MOFA, National Cybersecurity Office (NCO), National Police Agency (NPA), Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Ministry of Defense (MOD) and Japan Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center (JPCERT/CC), and on the UK side, FCDO, Department for Business and Trade (DBT), Department for Science, Information and Technology (DSIT) and National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).
- At this dialogue, following the enactment of Japan’s Cyber Response Capability Strengthening Act and Necessary Arrangement of Relevant Acts last year, as well as the adoption of a new Cybersecurity Strategy, the two sides exchanged views on a wide range of issues, such as on each country’s cybersecurity strategy and policy.
- Furthermore, building on the “Japan-UK Strategic Cyber Partnership” which Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, and The Rt Hon Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, concurred on in January this year during the Japan-UK Summit Meeting, the two sides exchanged views on initiatives including cooperation on deterring and defending against cyber threats, cooperation in international fora including the UN, and capacity building for cybersecurity.
- In addition, on this occasion, the relevant ministries, departments and agencies of Japan and the UK established a framework for providing mutual support in the event of significant malicious cyber activities.
- Both sides confirmed that the two countries will continue to hold the Japan-UK Cyber Dialogue.
