Meeting between Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA and Hon. Rhonda

On February 17, Mr. SHIMADA Tomoaki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call by Hon. Rhonda Tiakia Tomailuga, Member of Niue Legislative Assembly, who is visiting Japan at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA expressed his pleasure that active bilateral people-to-people exchanges have continued, following the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Niue in 2025.
  2. Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA stated that Japan will follow up on the outcomes of the 10th Pacific Leaders Meeting (PALM 10) held in July 2024, advance concrete initiatives while taking into account each country`s needs, and continue to stride forward together with the Pacific Island countries. In addition, referring to Japan’s contribution to the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF) of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), Parliamentary Vice-Minister SHIMADA stated that Japan is determined to work together to address shared challenges such as climate change-which Pacific Island countries regard as “the single greatest existential threat”-and the marine environment. In response, Hon. Rhonda expressed her appreciation to the Government and people of Japan for their cooperation.
