OECD-Southeast Asia Policy Roundtable: Strengthening Economic Security for Prosperity in Southeast Asia: Policy Insights from Strategic Industries (Results)
On February 6, the "OECD-Southeast Asia Policy Roundtable: Strengthening Economic Security for Prosperity in Southeast Asia: Policy Insights from Strategic Industries" was held in Tokyo, co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the OECD Tokyo Office. Mr. HORII Iwao, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the dialogue and delivered the opening remarks.
1. Overview
This policy roundtable was an economic security-themed policy dialogue between Southeast Asia and the OECD, featuring active discussions with government officials from Southeast Asia on areas closely related to economic security, such as shipbuilding, steel and AI.
From the OECD, Mr. Jerry Sheehan, Director of the Directorate for Science, Technology and Innovation, who is in charge of the above-mentioned fields, participated and delivered a keynote speech, as well as engaged in active discussions with participants from Southeast Asia.
From Japan, in addition to the opening remarks by State Minister HORII, senior officials from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications attended and contributed to the discussions.
From Southeast Asian countries, government officials and other participants visited Japan to attend the policy dialogue, and many participants from the embassies of both OECD member and Southeast Asian countries in Tokyo also attended.
Participants received updates on the latest situation from the OECD, deepened their understanding of economic security, and discussed the future direction for cooperation among Japan, the OECD, and Southeast Asia.
2. Opening Remarks by State Minister HORII
State Minister HORII underscored the importance of collaboration between the OECD and Southeast Asian countries in addressing economic security, a pressing challenge confronting the international community.
State Minister HORII further announced Japan's commitment, through the OECD, to provide support for the shipbuilding sector and to facilitate the establishment of a regular dialogue framework between the OECD and Southeast Asian countries in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
Additionally, State Minister HORII highlighted the pivotal role of the OECD Tokyo Office as a key outreach hub to Southeast Asia, emphasizing its significance in advancing initiatives such as this event.
