The 7th Japan-EU Cyber Dialogue

On January 28 (January 28, local time), the 7th Japan-EU Cyber Dialogue was held in Brussels, Belgium

  1. Mr. YAMAMOTO Takeomi, Director, National Security Policy Division, Foreign Policy Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) led the Japanese delegation, and Ms. Barbara GALLO, Head of Division, Hybrid Threats and Cyber, Peace Security and Defence Directorate, European External Action Service and Ms. Christiane KIRKETERP DE VIRON, Acting Director for Cybersecurity and Trust, European Commission’s Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology led the EU delegation as co-chairs, with the participation of officials from MOFA, National Cybersecurity Office (NCO), National Police Agency (NPA), Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Ministry of Defense (MOD), and JPCERT/CC on the Japanese side, and European External Action Service, European Commission, Europol and other relevant agencies on the EU side.
  2. In this dialogue, following the enactment of Japan’s Cyber Response Capability Strengthening Act and Necessary Arrangement of Relevant Acts last year, as well as the adoption of a new Cybersecurity Strategy, the two sides exchanged views on various topics, such as cybersecurity strategies and policies of Japan and the EU, challenges in the cyber domain, bilateral and multilateral cooperation including in the UN, and capacity building assistance.
  3. Japan and the EU also held the Roundtable on Diplomatic Responses to Malicious Cyber Activities and exchanged the views on cyber security diplomacy.
  4. Both sides confirmed that they will continue to closely work together in the cyber domain including through the Japan-EU Cyber Dialogue.
