Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister Motegi by President Akane of the International Criminal Court (ICC)

On January 7th, commencing at 15:20 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from H.E. Judge AKANE Tomoko, President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), during her visit to Japan. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI stated that as a nation that attaches great importance to the rule of law Japan will continue to provide firm support for the ICC.
  2. In response, President Akane extended her appreciation for Japan’s contribution to the activities of the ICC and said that she looks forward to Japan’s continued support.
  3. The two sides then exchanged views on the environment surrounding the ICC and confirmed the importance of continuing fulfillment of its role by the ICC. They also concurred to continue their close cooperation toward the maintenance and strengthening of the rule of law in the international community.
