Signing of the Treaty between Japan and Canada on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters
On December 12 (local time) in Ottawa, Canada, H.E. Mr. YAMANOUCHI Kanji, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Canada, and Ms. Shalene Curtis-Micallef, Deputy Minister of Justice of Canada, signed the Treaty between Japan and Canada on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters.
This Treaty establishes a legal framework under which Japan and Canada shall, upon request by the other Party, provide mutual legal assistance in connection with investigations, prosecutions and other criminal proceedings.
The conclusion of this Treaty is expected to ensure more effective assistance. It will also enable direct communication between the Central Authorities of the two countries, thereby facilitating speedy and effective assistance and further promoting bilateral cooperation in combating crime.
It is expected that this Treaty will contribute to further strengthening cooperation between Japan and Canada, an important strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region, in the field of criminal justice. The Government of Japan intends to submit this Treaty to the Diet for approval of its conclusion.
