Dispatch of the Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team in Response to the Damages Caused by the Cyclone in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka

The Government of Japan has decided to dispatch the Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team to the affected area, based on the specific medical needs assessed through the dispatch of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) assessment team. The Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team consists of a total of 31 members, including medical doctors, nurses, and other health professionals, JICA staff, and a representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They are scheduled to depart Japan on December 3.

Based on humanitarian considerations as well as Japan’s friendly relations with the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, the Government of Japan intends to provide assistance, including the medical team.

In Sri Lanka, in addition to the deteriorating weather conditions due to the monsoon that has persisted since mid-November, Cyclone "Ditwah" struck Sri Lanka on November 27 local time, causing heavy rainfall in a wide range of areas. The death toll stands at 334, with approximately 1,110,000 affected.
