Welcome Reception for the Participants of the 65th Convention of Nikkei and Japanese Abroad Hosted by Foreign Minister IWAYA

On September 18, at the Iikura Guest House, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, hosted a reception to welcome overseas Japanese and Japanese descendants (Nikkei) who are participating in the 65th Convention of Nikkei and Japanese Abroad (organized by the Association of Nikkei & Japanese Abroad, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and others).

  1. In his opening speech, Minister IWAYA expressed his great pleasure to welcome more than 150 overseas Japanese and Nikkei from around the world once again this year. He stated that he was deeply impressed that Nikkei have overcome numerous hardships and have been active around the world and across generations, through his domestic and international activities as Foreign Minister and meeting with many Nikkei. Minister IWAYA also stated the Government’s intention to strengthen cooperation with Nikkei and work together with them.

On behalf of Nikkei, Ms. Christine Aiko Kubota, former President of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii and former President of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce, expressed appreciation to Minister IWAYA for hosting the reception. She stated that Nikkei have various historical backgrounds and are making efforts in both Japan and the countries where they currently live, each with their own thoughts. She also expressed their intention to make efforts so that Japan and the countries where they live can become leaders of world peace, taking pride in being Nikkei and carrying forward the spirit inherited from their ancestors.
  3. Following the remarks, informal talks took place in a cordial atmosphere between Japanese participants including Minister IWAYA, ambassadors from relevant countries to Japan, and Nikkei, which provided an opportunity to deepen their exchanges.
