Congratulatory Message from Foreign Minister IWAYA to The Rt Hon Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

On September 12, following the appointment of The Rt Hon Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, sent a congratulatory letter to Foreign Secretary Cooper.

  1. In the letter, Minister IWAYA congratulated Foreign Secretary Cooper on her appointment, and emphasised the importance of deepening cooperation between the two countries in a wide range of areas, including politics, economy, national security, and culture, as “enhanced global strategic partners” that share basic values and principles.
  2. Minister IWAYA also mentioned his willingness to further strengthen bilateral efforts toward realizing a "free and open Indo-Pacific", recognizing that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific is inseparable.
  3. Moreover, Minister IWAYA expressed his desire to further enhance Japan-UK cooperation in the field of security through the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), as well as to maintain and strengthen the free and open international trading system, including economic security and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
