Signing of the Japan-Australia Memorandum on Cooperation of Assisting Japanese and Australian Nationals Overseas

On September 5, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Senator the Hon. Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Australia, who was visiting Japan to attend the twelfth Japan-Australia Foreign and Defense Ministerial Consultations (“2+2”), signed a Memorandum between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia on Cooperation of Assisting Japanese and Australian Nationals Overseas.
- At the 11th “2+2” held in September 2024, Japan and Australia concurred on strengthening their coordination in the evacuation of their nationals from overseas during crises, based on their cooperation in evacuating their nationals from New Caledonia in May 2024. Considering this background, and their strong bilateral relationship as Special Strategic Partners, both sides decided to sign the Memorandum as a framework to further facilitate cooperation in assisting their nationals overseas in crises.
- Under this Memorandum, both sides will share information in peace time, which is expected to contribute significantly to ensuring the safety of Japanese nationals during crises, as the Memorandum provides a foundation for further facilitating smooth cooperation intimes of crises.
