Meeting between State Minister for Foreign Affairs FUJII and the Rt. Hon. Douglas Alexander MP, Minister of State for Trade Policy and Economic Security, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

On August 29, from 10:30 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, State Minister for Foreign Affairs FUJII Hisayuki met with the Rt. Hon. Douglas Alexander MP, Minister of State for Trade Policy and Economic Security of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Minister of State Alexander was visiting Japan on the occasion of the port call of the UK Carrier Strike Group in Tokyo. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, State Minister FUJII emphasised that security in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific is inseparable. He welcomed the first port call to Japan by a UK Carrier Strike Group in four years, as a demonstration of the UK’s firm commitment to the Indo-Pacific region.
  2. State Minister FUJII expressed his desire to further develop cooperation between Japan and the UK not only in the fields of security and defence, but also in the economic field, including the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the maintenance and strengthening of the free and open international trading system, and economic security. In response, Minister of State Alexander remarked that the Japan-UK “Economic 2+2” Ministerial Meeting held in March of this year had been highly significant, and that he looked forward to following up on its outcomes to further strengthen bilateral economic collaboration.
  3. Both sides reaffirmed that Japan and the UK are enhanced global strategic partners and concurred to deepen cooperation across a wide range of fields.
