Meeting between Foreign Minister IWAYA and Ms. Pope, Director General of IOM

On August 21, commencing at 3:05 p.m. for approximately 10 minutes, IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Ms. Amy E. Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), in Yokohama. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Minister IWAYA stated that, with the increasing global movement of people, Japan wishes to work together with the IOM to improve the global humanitarian situation.
  2. In response, Director General Pope expressed her appreciation for Japan’s past cooperation, emphasized the importance of working with Japan, and stated that she looks forward to continuing cooperation in responding to humanitarian crises.
  3. In addition, the two exchanged views on cooperation with Japan’s private sector in Africa and other regions.
